If you are going to Sin City, you're going to want to know about Las Vegas hotels.

Las Vegas hotels are divided into three categories. First, you have the Las Vegas hotels on the world famous "Strip." Then you have the downtown hotels. Finally, you have the off the beaten track hotels.

When people think about Las Vegas hotels, they immediately think of the glitz and glamour of the Strip. For a while it seemed as if a strip hotel was being blown up every month to make way for a newer, glitzier palace. Now almost all of the Strip Hotels are less than 20 years old.

There are two types of Las Vegas hotels on the Strip. The first is the "themed" hotel. Circus Circus is the granddady of the concept. Circus Circus Entertainment owns other concept hotels such as Excalibur and Luxor. Steve Wynn was instrumental in developing concept hotels. Other examples include the MGM Grand, the Paris Las Vegas, New York, New York, and the Venitian.

But a few years ago, Wynn changed directions. In his Wynn Las Vegas hotel, he moved away from concepts and presented sheer luxury. Other hotels including the newly opened Trump Las Vegas have followed suit.

Downtown Las Vegas hotels have followed a different path to glory. Less glamourous than their Strip counterparts a mile away, downtown hotels like Fitzgeralds and the Gold Spike Hotel and Casino. These hotels are less expensive than Strip Hotels and cater to the serious gambler. Also, if you are searching for the "old time Vegas" experience, you're more likely to find it downtown.

That's not to say there's no glamour in downtown Las Vegas hotels. The Freemont Street Experience is a symphony of lights unrivled anywhere on the strip.

The Main Street Station Casino Brewery Hotel is consistantly rated the best of the downtown Las Vegas hotels. Other good choices include the Freemont Hotel and Casino and the Four Queens Hotel and Casino.

If you are looking for a quiet Las Vegas hotel that's away from the tourist action, you can find even better bargains.

At the Knight's Inn on Swenson street, you can usually get a room for $30 and the Motel 6 on Boulder Highway won't put you back more than $35. More upscale Las Vegas hotel include three Hampton Inns (on Cascade Valley Court, Boulder Highway, and Industrial Parkway), and the georgeous JW Marriott Las Vegas hotel on Rampart Blvd.

Whatever your Las Vegas hotel need, there's sure to be an inn to fit the bill.
